Employment at sea is very
different than on shore and it is important to know that
along with numerous benefits, are the challenges of being at
sea. These include a restricted, shared living environment,
and at times, a physically demanding shop schedule for the
entire length of the six-month contract. It is important to
understand that Starboard Cruise Services is a customer
service-oriented retail organization and that each
employee's ability to provide premium levels of customer
service is critical to the passengers’ onboard experience.
As a result, Starboard relies on each gift shop employee's
commitment, dedication, loyalty and team spirit to create
the most positive experience for passengers and fellow
crewmembers. In return, Starboard makes every effort
possible to offer its employees an enjoyable opportunity to
be on board with some of the world's greatest cruise lines.
Your assigned cruise ship will be your home and work place
for the duration of your six-month contract. Cruise ships
are often compared to large floating hotels managed by the
Hotel Manager who supervises all service areas, including
Starboard's gift shops. The Ship's Master is responsible for
the safety and well being of all cruise line and concessionaire
employees, as well as our passengers. Crew quarters are a
relatively small and shared cabin, complete with restroom
and shower facilities.
Your status on board is classified as "Staff".
This allows certain on board "Deck" privileges,
however, keep in mind that these employee privileges will
vary by cruise line. To help you work within the ship's operational
standards and expectations of a cruise line concessionaire,
Starboard employees must comply with the Ship's Master's Rules
and Regulations. You will receive your copy upon embarkation.
Cruise line personnel consist of a large cross-section of
the world. You'll find a world of integrated cultures and
a variety of languages, which provides for a learning-rich
environment. Compatibility within Starboard's retail team
as well as with our fellow crewmembers is essential to our
successful partnerships with the ship's total crew. It is
important that our retail team members collaborate well with
each other in and out of our shops and in each port. Your
role assignment is to become one of Starboard's ambassadors
at sea!!
Starboard's onboard grooming standards are comparable to
those of the finest specialty stores and boutiques. Just as
it is important to uphold premium merchandise presentation
standards, it is an on board Sales Associate's practice to
be properly attired in the Company uniform at all times in
the shops and when visible in passenger areas. Your appearance
and disposition are a very important part of how passengers
perceive the quality of our merchandise selection and superior
customer service. These are integral to our Vision and Mission
Statement!.
It's important to know that all shipboard personnel must
attend weekly safety drills.
